This move is important amid increased scrutiny of the use of copyrighted content by AI companies, which have sparked various lawsuits. Get caught up previously suing AI Stability for alleged image-taking without permission (image screening).
According to Mark Lemley, Director of Legal, Science and Technology Program at Stanford University, the company's move to sign a license agreement while fighting for the use of fair use could be a double-edged sword.
AI companies will end up paying entities like Getty who have a collection of high-quality content. However, this licensing model cannot be applied to all content on the internet, as AI training requires too many data sources," said Lemley.
This agreement is also in line with Getty's efforts to support AI-based creativity, by providing a safe way for users to generate visuals using licensed content in AI-generative tools.
