Make And Perplexity Sign Multi-Year Cooperation To Improve AI-Based Search Visuals

JAKARTA - The artificial intelligence (AI) technology company Perplexity signed a multi-year cooperation agreement with Getty Images Holdings Inc to display images from its visual library of Getty across its all AI-based search and discovery tools. This news saw Getty shares rise by about 5% on Friday trading October 31.

The deal marks the latest step in the licensing cooperation trend between AI startups and large digital platforms, which seeks to create new sources of income while protecting their intellectual property rights.

Through API integration, Getty will provide direct access to its licensed image collection, so that Perplexity users can view premium content with the right atribution. Perplexity will also display image credit and source links to ensure the use of legally licensed content.

This move is important amid increased scrutiny of the use of copyrighted content by AI companies, which have sparked various lawsuits. Get caught up previously suing AI Stability for alleged image-taking without permission (image screening).

This agreement is also in line with Getty's efforts to support AI-based creativity, by providing a safe way for users to generate visuals using licensed content in AI-generative tools.
