JAKARTA YouTube announced a series of new features that focus on improving viewing experience. One of the features that the platform will launch is an automatic resolution upgrade.

This feature is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) so that it can increase the video that was initially low-resolution to HD quality. This video resolution upscaling feature only applies to videos uploaded in the 240p to 720p resolution range.

YouTube said it would upgrade this video from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD) resolution. YouTube spokeswoman Veronica Navarrete, according to The Verge, confirmed that this feature will not apply to old remastered videos to 1080p.

The platform also plans to support a resolution increase of up to 4K in the near future. Although it seems helpful, YouTube should provide an option to disable this automatic scale improvement feature. The reason is, not everyone wants to increase this automatic resolution.

"The creators will remain in full control of their library, as the original file and original video resolution will remain intact, with a clear option to disable this upgrade," YouTube said, quoted on Thursday, October 30.

YouTube insists that viewers can still watch videos in the original upload resolution. When the video watched applies a super resolution, the audience will clearly see the label in Settings.

In addition, YouTube is also expanding the limit for the video thumbnail size which is currently 2MB to 50MB. This change will help creators in uploading and displaying 4K resolution thumbnail images.
