JAKARTA - Meta Platforms Inc. announced the implementation of a number of new safety measures on its artificial intelligence (AI) product after an exclusive Reuters report in early August sparked public concerns about the safety of teens in using chatbots.
Meta's latest move includes retraining the AI system so as not to engage in genital conversations or lead to discussions about self-harm or suicide with underage users. In addition, Meta also temporarily limits youth access to certain AI characters.
A Meta spokesperson, Andy Stone, said in an emailed statement on Friday, August 29 that this policy is a temporary step as the company develops a long-term mechanism to ensure a safe and age-appropriate AI-use experience for teens. This security has begun to be implemented and will continue to be adjusted in line with the refinement of our system," Stone said.

This step was taken after a Reuters report revealed that Meta chatbots were previously allowed to behave provocatively, including having romantic or sensual conversations with young users. The findings sparked a wave of criticism and a sharp spotlight on Meta AI policy.
This case even caught the attention of United States politicians. Senator Josh Hawley, earlier this month, launched an investigation into Facebook's parent company's AI policy, demanding documents related to regulations that allow chatbots to inappropriately interact with minors.
Similar concerns were voiced by members of Congress both from the Democratic Party and Republicans, after learning of the internal Meta documents previously reviewed by Reuters. The document mentions a rule that allows chatbots to tease into romantic role play with children.
Meta itself has confirmed the authenticity of the document. However, the company confirmed that after receiving questions from Reuters, the controversial section was removed. For example and the notes in question are wrong, not in accordance with our policies, and have been removed," Stone said earlier this month.
With this latest safety measure, Meta is trying to calm public concerns and regulators regarding the potential negative impact of AI on teens. However, surveillance from various parties is expected to continue along with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology.
