JAKARTA - YouTube will start implementing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based age verification system to differentiate teenage and adult users, to a small number of users in the United States starting next week.

This machine learning technology will estimate the user's age based on a number of signals including viewing history, video search type, and account age without relying solely on the date of birth registered on the account.

Users identified as teenagers will automatically get additional protection, such as disabling personalized ads, activating digital welfare features, and limiting specific content recommendations.

"We will use AI to interpret various signals that help us determine whether a user is over or under 18 years of age," said YouTube Youth's Director of Product Management, James Beser in his announcement.

However, if the system mistakenly estimates that a user under 18 years of age, they will have the option to verify that they are 18 years of age and older, for example by using a credit card or official identity.

"We will only allow users who are inferred or verified over 18 years of age to view limited content that may not be appropriate for younger viewers," he explained.

This step is part of YouTube's ongoing efforts to create a safe ecosystem for children and adolescents, while maintaining the privacy of young users.

Along with advances and feedback from users, YouTube promises to gradually expand this age verification to all users.
