JAKARTA - Google has officially taken legal action against the perpetrators behind the BadBox 2.0 botnet, a cyber crime network known to have infected more than 10 million uncertified Android devices worldwide.

This legal action is a follow-up to Google, after their researchers had previously collaborated with HUMAN Security and Trend Micro to uncover the BadBox 2.0 campaign.

"We have filed a lawsuit in a New York federal court against the perpetrators behind the botnet," Google wrote in an open statement on their official blog.

Based on its findings, cybercriminals infect the device with previously installed malware, and use it to commit advertising fraud and other digital crimes on a large scale.

Fortunately, Google's Ad Traffic Quality team managed to identify and tackle this threat quickly. As part of the response, Google has also updated the Google Play Protect feature, to automatically block BadBox-related apps.

Although the protection system has kept users and partners from direct threats, this lawsuit is considered an important step to dismantle the perpetrator's network behind BadBox and permanently stop their actions.

"So limiting their ability to commit more crimes and fraud," continued the search giant.

The FBI has also issued warnings about this illicit activity, and Google continues to coordinate with the FBI on efforts to protect consumers and businesses around the world.
