JAKARTA - Singapore is investigating a fraud case involving high-tech servers suspected of containing Nvidia's advanced chips. This case dragged several well-known US technology companies and raised the issue of smuggling AI chips into China.

According to Singapore's Minister of Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, the servers involved in this case were supplied by two US technology companies, Dell Technologies and Super Micro Computers, to local companies in Singapore. The servers were then sent to Malaysia, although their final destination is still uncertain.

"We suspect these servers may contain Nvidia chips, but the investigation is still ongoing," Shanmugam told a news conference. The Singapore government has asked for clarification from US authorities regarding possible violations of export rules.

The case comes amid a separate investigation by the US government into DeepSek, a Chinese AI company accused of using the banned Nvidia chip. DeepSek previously claimed to only use the legal H800 and A100 chips purchased before the ban.

Singapore, as the leading technology trading center in Asia, is the second largest market for Nvidia after the US. However, most of the chips entering Singapore were re-exported to other countries.

The companies involved provide mixed responses. Dell Technologies stated that it has a strict export compliance program and is ready to take firm action if violations are found. Super Micro Computer also affirms its commitment to comply with all US export regulations. Meanwhile, Nvidia chose not to comment on this case.

This case highlights the complexity of global technology trading amid the geopolitical tensions of the US-China, as well as testing the effectiveness of state-of-the-art export control of advanced chips through third countries such as Singapore. Singapore authorities insist they will continue to investigate the case independently after receiving an anonymous report on the possibility of fraud.
