JAKARTA Amazon plans to reduce the number of its employees over the next few years. This employee reduction is the impact of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in all companies.

This plan was revealed by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy on Tuesday, June 17 through the company's official blog. Jassy said that Amazon needed fewer workers in some parts due to the use of agenative AI and AI agents.

"That (AI) will change the way we work. We will need fewer people to do some of the work that is currently being done, and more people to do other types of work," said Jassy.

The Amazon leader did not mention how many employees would be reduced, both in terms of numbers and percentages. Jassy also emphasized that the reduction in total employees would continue for increased efficiency.

"It is difficult to know for sure the final result from time to time, but in the next few years, we estimate this will reduce the total number of our company's workers because we have obtained an increase in efficiency from the use of AI," Jassy explained.

Since 2022, reported through The Verge, Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 workers in various fields. Not long ago, around last May, Amazon also cut employees in the device, service, and book division.

The focus on increasing this efficiency will increase the number of employees dismissed by Amazon. According to Jassy, the use of AI is important in the future. In fact, workers are required to understand AI.

"Those who accept this change, become fluent in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and provide services to customers, will be in a good position to have a high impact," said Jassy.
