JAKARTA - OpenAI on Monday, April 28, announced that it has updated its ChatGPT web search capabilities to improve the online shopping experience for users with personalized product recommendations. This includes images, reviews, and live purchase links.

This AI-generative search feature has become popular since its introduction last year, and has now become one of the most searched tools, with more than 1 billion web searches in the past week, according to a US company statement.

This update will be available on OpenAI's default AI model, GPT-4o, and can be accessed by all ChatGPT users worldwide including users at Pro, Plus, and Free levels as well as users who use this service without logging into the account.

Users will receive customized product recommendations in various categories, such as fashion, beauty, household goods, and electronics when they ask specific questions.

This update will not include ads, and OpenAI will not accept commissions from purchases made through the ChatGPT platform. Shopping search results will be determined independently and rely on structured metadata from third-party sources, such as prices, product descriptions, and reviews.

The move comes as OpenAI's attempt to challenge Alphabet's dominance in searches, offering a more focused alternative to users, in contrast to Google's ad-packed search results.

In February, OpenAI's weekly number of active users surpassed 400 million, according to a company spokesman.
