JAKARTA - After previously deciding to stop the National Data Center (PDN) project in Batam, Minister of Communications and Digital Meutya Hafid said that the PDN project would continue.

However, Meutya emphasized that his party had not coordinated with the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy regarding the construction of the PDN Center in Nongsa, Batam, Riau Islands Province.

Previously, launching ANTARA, Director of PT. Internet Resort Park as the Building Business Entity and Manager of SEZ Nongsa Peters Vincen said Batam would be the second National Data Center (PDN) construction site in Indonesia.

Currently, the Nongsa Digital Park Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has a data center ecosystem. For the second GDP, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is planned to start construction in 2025.

However, Meutya emphasized that in principle the ministry does require a lot of data centers. Therefore, both the government and the private sector are expected to contribute to this development, including through the Government and Private Cooperation (PPP) scheme.

"There has been no communication with the Coordinating Minister for Airlangga, later in the near future, God willing, we will meet. In principle, of course, the data center needs a lot and needs to be at several points. So later which one will be included in the PDN ecosystem and which one is the private role we will see," explained Meutya on Thursday, March 20 at the Komdigi office.

As for the PDN project in Batam, which previously collaborated with Korea, Meutya stated that the government is currently evaluating the possibility of cooperation with other parties outside Korea.

"Those with Korea have ended 2 years, we are currently exerciseing more or less cooperation with other parties outside Korea whose cooperation period has been completed," added Meutya.

For information, this news has also been circulating for a long time in mid-July 2024. Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso at that time revealed that there were 6 new investors lining up to invest in building data centers at the SEZ Nongsa Digital Park, Batam, Riau Islands (Kepri). The investors came from China, Japan, and the United States (US), but the investment value is not yet known.
