JAKARTA Manus AI, an artificial intelligence startup from China, announced a strategic partnership with the team behind Alibaba's tech giant AI Qwen model. This move aims to strengthen the launch of the world's first general AI agent developed by Manus AI.
Unlike chatbots, AI agents serve as "digital employees" who can complete tasks independently with few orders from users.
Manus AI, launched last week, claims its performance is superior to DeepResearch, OpenAI's AI agent. This launch went viral on Chinese social media, with many comparing it to DeepSeek, a developer-made chatbot from Hangzhou that surprised Silicon Valley with an AI model that was claimed to be equivalent to OpenAI's best product but at a lower cost.
Manus' partnership with Qwen has the potential to change the dynamics of the AI industry which is still affected by the emergence of DeepSek. With offices in Beijing and Wuhan, as well as part of Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co, Manus has marketed their products by completing various tasks for free for users on X.

However, access to this AI agent is still limited through invitations, and its website is disrupted due to a surge in users. Partnerships with Qwen are expected to help Manus overcome the spike in traffic and expand its user base, while Alibaba seeks to strengthen its position in competition against DeepSek.
The two parties will collaborate by utilizing the Qwen open-source AI model, as well as integrating the function of the AI Manus agent with the AI model and computing platform in China. Alibaba confirmed this partnership through its spokesperson.
"We look forward to collaboration with more global AI innovators," said Alibaba's spokesman.
The Qwen development team is one of the first to respond to DeepSek's global success in January by releasing a model that is claimed to be superior to DeepSek-V3 just days later, even on national holidays.
