JAKARTA Skype, a platform that was popular in its time, is being a hot topic of conversation after the closing string of the application was discovered by a number of parties. Now, the news of the closure has finally been confirmed.

Microsoft says Skype will indeed close on May 5. In the Skype website notes found at 9to5mac, Microsoft explained that the Teams platform will be a replacement for the app, which was founded in 2003.

"Skype will be discontinued in May 2025. Starting March 2025, you will be able to log into Free Microsoft Teams with your Skype credentials, and your chats and contacts will be available there and ready for use," reads a note on the Skype website.

Skype users are convinced to switch to the Teams platform with features called similar. They will still receive call features, message delivery for free, meeting procurement, community, and other features in the Teams app.

Microsoft did not explain the exact reason behind Skype's closing. However, to TechCrunch, the tech giant said it wanted to pay more attention to Teams. That way, Teams will not have the same fate as Skype in the future.

"We know this is an important thing for Skype users and we are very grateful for their support for Skype and all the learning that has been a factor in Teams over the past seven years," Microsoft said.

Skype is not a communication platform founded by Microsoft. The company only acquired Skype in 2011 with a value of about 8.5 billion or equivalent to IDR 140 trillion.

Unlike Zoom, which has succeeded in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) intelligently and remains used by various companies or individuals, Skype is even more lagging behind its less competitive features.
