A group of group media from Italy filed a criminal complaint with the Rome General Prosecutor's Office regarding the recent hack of WhatsApp against more than 100 journalists and activists.
According to a Bloomberg report, they hope to find out who installed the zero-click spyware, created by the Paragon Solutions founded by Israel.
In the complaint, the media described that zero-click spyware causes intolerable interference in the personal and professional dimensions of journalists.
In addition, they also said the hack put journalists at great risk to threaten the safety of individuals. The complaint alleges that those responsible for violating Italian law prohibiting "illegal installation" of wiretapping equipment.
WhatsApp said that it immediately contacted the victims of the hack personally. They also claimed the zero-click hack used a malicious PDF sent to groups on the platform.
Earlier this month, the Italian government confirmed that at least seven phones in Italy were involved in the campaign and its National Cybersecurity Agency is conducting an investigation.
