JAKARTA - As a form of compliance with Article 24(2) of the Digital Services Act (DSA) which applies in the European Union (EU), Meta releases its user reports in the country.

Based on its report, WhatsApp announced that the average number of monthly active recipients of WhatsApp Channels in the European Union (EU) reached around 46.8 million over the past six months.

"We expect average monthly active recipients of WhatsApp Channels on the EU by referring to average monthly active users on the service," Meta said in a document that VOI got from Engadget.

From data compiled from July 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, WhatsApp stated that the figure was calculated based on the number of users of the WhatsApp mobile application who opened the Channel within the last 30 days from the date of measurement.

"For WhatsApp Channels, we define monthly active users as active users of WhatsApp mobile apps that have opened Channels in the last 30 days since the measurement date," he added.

This report is prepared to meet the requirements of the DSA Law which requires large digital platforms to provide transparency regarding the number of their users.

With this data, regulators and the public can better understand the impact and reach of platforms in the dissemination of digital information in EU territory.

For information, as of February 17, 2024, DSA rules apply to all platforms. Since late August 2023, this rule has been in effect for certain platforms with more than 45 million users in the EU, called very large online platforms (VLOP) or very large online search engines (VLOSE).
