JAKARTA - Microsoft announced it has signed a new agreement with OpenAI, including for the Stargate project and the extension of cooperation between the two companies until 2030.

Through this Stargate project, Microsoft agreed to no longer be an exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI, and OpenAI is now allowed to build its own computing capacity and partner with other cloud providers, such as Oracle.

However, Microsoft insists that they remain the main investors at OpenAI. Thus, Microsoft will provide funding and computing capacity to support the company's growth and benefit from OpenAI's valuation growth.

"We are very pleased to be able to continue our strategic partnership with OpenAI and work together on the Stargate project," Microsoft wrote in an announcement on its official website quoted Wednesday, January 22.

Microsoft and OpenAI also maintain a two-way revenue sharing agreement, ensuring that the two companies benefit from increasing the use of AI models, both new and existing.

Changes in the exclusivity agreement were also introduced, with Microsoft now having the first right of rejection (Right of First Refusal/ROFR) over new capacities.

In addition, Microsoft also gave OpenAI approval to build additional capacity, especially for research needs and development of AI models.

"Today's announcement complements what the two companies have been working on since 2019. We thank OpenAI for the continuous partnership and look forward to great things in the future," he concluded.
