JAKARTA Following in the footsteps of Belgium and Greece, Uruguay decided to join the Artemis Agreement. With Uruguay's participation, the Artemis program is now supported by 36 countries.

The signing ceremony for the Artemis Agreement was held at theNASA Headquarters on Thursday, February 15. At the event, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, and Uruguay Foreign Minister Omar Paganini signed an agreement.

Apart from Nelson and Paganini, the event was also attended by NASA's Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, U.S. State Department Assistant Assistant Secretary Kevin Sullivan, Uruguay Ambassador to the US, total Augusto Dur total Hareau, and US Ambassador to Uruguay, Heide Fulton.

Nelson welcomes Uruguay as a new member of the Artemis Agreement. The NASA official said he was pleased with Uruguay's involvement because the South American country has some of the same commitments as the US.

"AS and Uruguay have the same commitment to democracy and peace, and now, we are expanding these principles into the cosmos to commit to safe and transparent space exploration," Nelson said.

In line with Nelson's statement, Paganini said this space cooperation would build a new chapter in the bilateral agenda. Therefore, Paganini was honored by the opportunity to join the Artemis Agreement.

"We believe that this signing ceremony is not the end of everything, but the beginning of a new bilateral route based on dense activities of knowledge and new opportunities for our society," said Paganini.

Not long ago, on February 9, Greece became the 35th country to enter the Artemis Agreement. By joining Uruguay and Greece into the agreement, they will support the exploration of astronauts on the Moon.

This agreement not only maintains relations between countries, but also guarantees safe activities during exploration on the Moon. The merged countries also guarantee publication of all scientific data obtained on the Moon.
