JAKARTA - Arm is again carrying a breakthrough through new CPU and GPU designs, with increased performance as well as power efficiency for laptop-on-Chip (SoC) systems and smartphones.

In its announcement, the company launched a platform dubbed Total Compute Solutions (TCS23) based on the third generation Armv9.2 architecture that offers computing clusters using three-type CPU core mixtures.

The core of the platform is performance-oriented Cortex-X4, central Cortex-A720 and efficiency-focused Cortex-A520.

Like previous generations, this CPU only supports 64-bit and can be used in clusters up to 14 cores, thanks to the design of the new DynamIQ Joint Unit or DSU-120.

For smartphones, Arm stated that there would be a 27 percent increase in performance in the 1+5+2 (X+A720+A520) core configuration compared to the 1+4+3 structure that previously stood out in the flagship chip.

"This is the fastest CPU we've ever made, bringing performance 15 percent higher than Cortex-X3," Arm said in his official blog quoted Tuesday, May 30.

Cortex-X3 is the driver of today's flagship Android smartphone chipsets, such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (using Kryo cores based on Arm design), MediaTek Dimensity 9200/9200+ and others.

Furthermore, Cortex-X4 is also said to occupy 10 percent less space while increasing power efficiency by 40 percent compared to Cortex-X3 when used on comparable hardware specifications (speed hours, manufacturing and cache processes).

Cortex-X4 can be expected on flagship mobile chipsets, such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and MediaTek Dimensity 9300.

"This increase in performance and efficiency brings experience to devices, such as UI responsiveness and application launch time, to the next level and enabling next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)-based applications," said Arm.

This CPU performance extends to new, large and small Arm cores, namely Cortex-A720 and Cortex-A520 in the big.LITTLE Arm architecture. Now looks more like a large.big.LITTLE with Cortex-X4 in mix.

According to Arm, Cortex-A720 is the leading IP CPU in the industry that improves sustainable performance as a cluster hard worker.

Meanwhile, Cortex-A520 is Arm's most capable high-efficiency CPU core. Usage cases such as AAA games, productivity throughout the day, and background tasks all benefit from an increase in power efficiency by 20 percent of this new CPU design compared to previous generations.

"In this new generation of CPU designs, we take our long-term partnership with TSMC one step ahead by recording Cortex-X4 on the first N3E TSMC process in the industry. This ensures that our ecosystem is ready to maximize the benefits of PPA from our processor technology once it is affixed," said Arm.

Cortex-A720 and Cortex-A520 are claimed to be present on several upper-middle class chips, such as the Snapdragon 7 Gen x series.

Furthermore, Arm also introduced a newer GPU design to accompany advanced CPUs and claimed to be the most efficient GPU ever, namely Immortalis-G720.

Immortalis-G720 has increased performance and efficiency by 15 percent from the previous generation, as well as an increase of 40 percent in system-level efficiency, resulting in higher-quality graphics for more immersive visual experiences.

Arm claims that the 25 percent peak performance is better owned by Immortalis-G720 in applications related to machine learning.

The new GPU is intended for flagship chipsets, while the newly launched Mali-G720 and Mali-G620 GPUs also target middle-class smartphones and other devices such as streaming boxes, AR/VR headsets.

"Through this new Mali GPU, we are committed to bringing premium graphic features to a wider consumer device market more quickly," said Arm.
