JAKARTA - Samsung Display recently revealed their latest concept, Rollable Flex, which is a rollable and held monitor such as a small roll of paper or yoga mattress. This screen has the ability to roll up to about 2 inches (49 mm) and can be held up to a maximum vertical length of 10 inches (254.4 mm) five times the size when rolled up.
On the previous folding or sliding screen, the scale that can be offered is only about three times the form factor. With Rollable Flex, Samsung hopes to help consumers by making larger devices such as laptops, tablets, and display screens smaller and easier to carry.
According to the company, the secret of this device lies in a carefully designed O-shaped axis, around which the screen is circular like the most expensive toilet paper in the world.
"We managed to turn a large screen that was difficult to carry into an easy-to-take shape, by making it rolled up," said Samsung Display, quoted by the Daily Mail.
However, Rollable Flex is not the first rolling screen on the market. Other companies have also tried to enter this space, including South Korean flat TV manufacturer LG, which has impressive CES for years with the concept of 65-inch rolling TV.
After two years of introducing the concept in a trade show, LG's 8K defined rollable Signature OLED R television was finally launched in South Korea at a fantastic retail price, reaching US$87.000 (Rp1.3 billion).
Samsung is showing Rollable Flex for the first time this week, along with a number of other new technologies that can be shaken and bent, at the 2023 SID Display Week, an industry exhibition in Los Angeles.
Samsung Display also introduced a prototype of a new foldable phone, Flex In & Out, which can be folded in and out up to 360 degrees, as well as Flex Hybrid, which combines foldable and sliding technologies.
There is no information yet when Samsung will make the Rollable Flex screen available to consumers, but they promised that they would soon bring this exciting innovation to market.
