JAKARTA - The Signal messaging application has reportedly experienced an increase in usage in the last few days. This happened along with WhatsApp's new privacy policy which shares data with Facebook.
According to the Sensor Tower data report, the number of downloads and installs of the Signal and Telegram applications has increased dramatically. While the number of WhatsApp users has decreased.
It was recorded that more than 100,000 new users installed Signal, both on the App Store and from the Google Play Store. The same thing happened to Telegram, which received nearly 2.2 million new downloads.
The data also shows that new installations of the WhatsApp application fell 11 percent, in the first week of 2021. Even though it has decreased, the number of WhatApp downloads is still relatively high, around 10.5 million downloads.
Signal's popularity has reportedly surged, after being supported by Elon Musk on Twitter. The Tesla and SpaceX boss also advised his followers to use Signal.
Musk's appeal is due to the latest changes to Facebook's privacy policy. The update allows the Facebook service to manage user data to become its ad target market.
Launching Mashable, Signal is a free messaging and voice chat application that focuses on privacy. Signal can be used on Apple, Android smartphones, and via desktop.
Signal is considered very private. Communication on Signal is claimed to be end-to-end encrypted, which means that only people in the message can see the content of these messages. Even the company can't see the message sent.
