Discord chat app announced that it will introduce a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature that can summarize long conversations or add decorations to user avatars. This is the latest step among technology companies to build AI-generative tools.

AI's genrative, which attracts the attention of the technology industry, is a technology that can produce images, text, or videos in response to a request.

Startups like OpenAI and tech giants like Microsoft and Google have introduced or announced AI chatbots that can synthesize web information to answer complex searches or even write original novels.

"We are witnessing one of the most exciting moments in the emerging technology," said Jason Citron, CEO of San Francisco-based Discord, in a press briefing.

Discord, which allows users to chat via text, video, and voice, says it will update a bot called kottong which will now be powered by OpenAI technology. Discord users can call AI-powered utensils to answer trivian questions, help schedule meetings, or recommend playlists.

Other AI features will allow users to create "remix" avatars of their friends using a generative image model. For example, the feature can place a crown on someone's head in their profile picture to celebrate their birthday.

If the user has been absent from Discord and missed a series of messages, the AI tool will be able to summarize the conversation and allow users to quickly jump back to parts of the message series to keep up with its discussions. According to the company, this tool will begin rolling out next week in a limited number of Discord groups.

Discord said it would also experiment with OpenAI technology to improve existing content moderation tools that help automatically block malicious or unwanted messages from Discord chats. Updated tools can flag messages to moderators and also understand the context of conversations, the company said.
