Elon Musk Promises Performance Shares For Remaining Twitter Employees After Massive Layoffs

JAKARTA - Elon Musk emailed remaining Twitter employees on Monday morning February 27 informing that after a sudden round of layoffs (PHK) by the weekend, those remaining would receive a "very significant" performance-based stock award on March 24. This is stated in an internal memo obtained by The Verge.

"Last week, we completed a difficult organizational reshuffle focused on improving future implementation, using as much feedback as we can from the rest of the company," Musk wrote. "Those who live are highly respected by those around them."

The short memo entitled "Tourship Award" was Musk's first communication to Twitter employees since he fired hundreds more employees, including some senior followers and nearly the entire product team without warning last weekend.

After a few rounds of cuts and demands that employees be "very harsh," Musk has yet to share details on how he will replace lost stock awards when he makes Twitter private.

In his previous internal comments, he has referred to the system he created on SpaceX to allow employees to regularly sell company shares to interested investors. Given Twitter's difficult financial situation compared to SpaceX, it is not clear that interest in its shares is in the short term.

"I think he just knocked everything down to the bone and tried to run it as simple as possible until the market turned around," said an employee who had just been fired at The Verge.
