JAKARTA - The anticipated Ethereum network upgrade, Shapella, is ready to be activated on the Sepolia network at the epoch 55632 on February 28, said ETH core developer Tim Beiko.

After months of testing and launching of the interim devnet, Shapella's development consisted of two Ethereum upgrades, namely "Shanghai" and "Capella". This upgrade allows Ethereum's withdrawal of the execution layer and increases the consensus layer of the chain simultaneously.

A new function will be introduced in the execution layer and consensus. Changes in the execution layer include EIP-3651: Warm COINBASE, EIP-3855: PUSH0 Instruction, EIP-3860: Limit and meter initialization code, EIP-4895: Vacure chain thrust as operation, and EIP-6049: No longer using SELFDESTRUCT.

On the other hand, Capella's increase in the consensus layer includes full and partial withdrawals for validators. The original single historical roots will be replaced by independent countries and block historical accumulators.

Although Ethereum users or ETH holders do not need to upgrade unless they are informed to take additional steps, node operators who do not stake must upgrade their nodes to Ethereum client releases for Sepolia upgrades. The same goes for stakers.

The developers emphasize the importance of upgrading to the latest version. If stakers or node operators fail to update to the latest version, their clients will be synced to the pre-fork blockchain after upgrade. As a result, they will be stuck in incompatible chains following the old rules and will not be able to send ETH tokens or operate on the post-Shapella Sepolia network.

This latest development comes a week after concerns about a potential delay in Shanghai upgrades arose due to vulnerabilities detected in the Shapella public test network. However, developers insist that the issue can be fixed with patches. All parties are expected to update their nodes as quickly as possible to avoid similar problems.
