JAKARTA In a poll conducted on Twitter Monday, December 19 by Tesla CEO Elon Musk about whether he should step down from the social media platform, the results showed that netizens asked him to step down.

Twitter users chose firmly in the poll for Musk to step down as chief executive of the social media platform. This is a strong reaction to the billionaire less than two months after he took over the now chaotic and controversial Twitter management.

Musk said on Sunday he would comply with the poll results, but did not provide details on when he would step down if the results said he should step down. He said that there was no new CEO successor on Twitter yet.

In the poll about 57.5% of the votes were for "Yes", while 42.5% opposed Musk's idea of resigning as Twitter chief, in a poll that appeared late Sunday. There were more than 17.5 million people voting in the poll.

"With Musk's statement - and some analysts - drastic measures are needed if the Twitter business model wants to stay afloat. There is an argument that without Musk at the helm, it will be difficult to find someone with sufficient enthusiasm to change the course of Twitter's ship business," said Sophie Lund-Yates, analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Musk was personally involved in work-level decisions ranging from car arrangement to supply chain issues at Tesla. He said last month that he would reduce his time on Twitter, and eventually found a new leader to run it.

Tesla shares opened about 2% on Monday, but then fell to a new low in two years at 145.82 US dollars. The stock has lost nearly 60% of its value this year.

Speaking to one Twitter user about a possible CEO change, Musk said on Sunday "There is no successor."

"Nobody wants a job that can really keep Twitter alive," he said.

Musk, who was seen in the football World Cup final in Qatar on Sunday, has yet to respond to Monday's poll results. Twitter also did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the media.

Meanwhile, Twitter is now conducting a poll on whether to have policies to prevent accounts advertising other social media platforms.

Policy updates will affect content from Facebook and Instagram from Meta Platforms, along with Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post. That will allow cross-content posts, Support's Twitter account said in a tweet that has now been deleted.

"This is the last one. I give up. You can find a link to my new Mastodon profile on my site," said Musk and Y-Combinator founder Paul Graham. Mastodon is a social network that is touted as a new alternative to Twitter. Twitter itself then suspended Graham's account after the post, but then reactivated it.
