JAKARTA - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is reported to be making a 4 nanometer (nm) chip at its semiconductor plant in Arizona, United States (US), when it opens in 2024.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said this was driven by demand from customers like Apple, which generated up to 25 percent of TSMC's total revenue.

The plant was originally planned to start with 5 nm chip production, but with pressure from Apple and other companies increasingly looking for component sources from the US, TSMC has stepped up its plans so the facility can supply more cutting-edge chips.

Apple plans to get some of the huge demand for chips from the Arizona plant. Of the 20,000 wafers per month TSMC will build at its Arizona facility, Apple will use about a third of the output.

"Apple and other major tech companies rely on TSMC for their chip-making needs, and that change means they will be able to get more of their processors from the US," Gurman said.

Apple Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook previously told employees that his company plans to take chips from the Arizona plant."

The new plan is scheduled to be announced in Phoenix next Tuesday with US President Joe Biden, Trade Secretary Gina Raimondo, and Tim Cook together with AMD CEO Lisa Su as well as Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang.

Apple is already in line to become one of the first buyers of TSMC's 2nm chips as well. Apple is reportedly using 4nm and 3nm processes for some of the upcoming M-series and A-series chips for use on Macs, iPads, iPhones, and other products.

Launching Neowin, Friday, December 2, due to supply chain disruptions and trade wars with China, more and more companies are trying to bring production to Europe and the US.
