The government through the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) of the Ministry of Finance has launched a program to use the Population Identification Number (NIK) as the Basic Taxpayer Number. This means that taxpayers can use NIP as the NPWP number. This change in NIK to NPWP is still limited and will be fully enforced as of January 1, 2024.

The tightening of NIK to NPWP has been set since Thursday, November 14, 2022. NIK integration with NPWP is stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Finance (PMK) 112/PMK.03/2022 concerning NPWP for Individual Taxpayers, Body Taxpayers, and Government Agencies Taxpayers.

It is explained in Article 2 paragraph (1) PMK 112/2022 that private taxpayers registered as permanent residents use NIK. Meanwhile, non-residential taxpayers, corporate taxpayers, and taxpayers of government agencies will use a 16-digit NPWP format.

Until next year, population data matching with the existing 15-digit NPWP before PMK 112/2022 takes effect. Later, if inappropriate or invalid data is found, the Directorate General of Taxes will contact the NIK owner for confirmation.

Thus, starting January 1, 2024, individual tax payments are required to use a NIK so that the number of valid NIKs for NPWP will increase.

Quoted from klc2.kemenkeu.go.id, in PMK 112 of 2022 it is stated that the issuance of NIK to NPWP applies to Indonesian citizens and foreigners, bodies, and government institutions by adding 0 (zero) at the beginning of their current active NPWP. That way the entire NPWP will have 16 digits.

Director of Counseling, Services, and Public Relations of DGT Neilmaldrin Noor at the DGT media meeting event in Batam, Riau Islands explained the latest data that currently there is approximately 75 percent of the identity of the population that has been integrated with NPWP.

The determination of the new format itself has been carried out since July 2022, but until December 31, 2023, tax administration services are still carried out on a limited basis to use a 16-digit NIK and NPWP.

"That this will be integrated, this can still be used by taxpayers (WP) until December 31, 2023," said Neil.
