JAKARTA - Former chief executive of Theranos blood test startup Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison on Friday for defrauding investors of up to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Holmes, once seen as Silicon Valley's magic son or The Next Steve Jobs, was ordered to start his prison sentence on April 27, 2023, in a case described by US District Judge Edward Davisa as disturbing in many ways.

"The tragedy of this case is Ms. Holmes brilliantly," said Davita before imposing the sentence on the 38-year-old woman.

Davita concluded that Holmes is claimed to be motivated by greed to lead investors to believe that his company can do more than he knows. He also sees his actions as the worst symptom of Silicon Valley.

"I love Theranos. It was the work of my life. My team means a lot to me. I was devastated by my failure. I am very sorry. I gave everything I have to build my company," Holmes said in court.

Launching CNBC International, Saturday, November 19, Holmes' defense team applied for a maximum sentence of 18 months, but instead, he was given 135 months, meaning 11 years and three months behind bars.

Theranos was founded by Holmes after leaving Stanford University, United States (US) at the age of 19. Promising revolutionary technology that can run hundreds of medical tests only by blood pressure.

The startup attracted big name supporters such as former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former defense minister James Mattis, who testified against him at trial.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) was the first to reveal a story about how Theranos struggled to meet expectations in 2015, but there were shortcomings and inaccuracies in its core technology.

It is claimed that Theranos was worth more than $9 billion but after the WSJ report, the company was dissolved in 2018 and Holmes charged with 12 counts of fraud, along with Balwani, who was convicted of 12 counts in his own trial.
