JAKARTA - TikTok has proven itself capable of becoming the first app to continue to grow in the world, as it turns out to be the most revenue-generating app in a quarter (Q).

According to Sensor Tower data, the agency, which has been known for its application research, sees TikTok as the world's best-selling app again, even as the market is experiencing a slight decline.

This report does combine TikTok's revenue with its Chinese version, Douyin. So the revenue comes from a combination of two apps that offer the same short video feature, not just one.

Both TikTok and Douyin on iOS both maintain their positions as non-game apps on the App Store and Google Play, with consumer spending of around 914.4 million US dollars equivalent to Rp13.9 trillion.

Meanwhile, Douyin alone earned around 433.5 million US dollars equivalent to Rp6.6 trillion in consumer spending, or 47 percent of the total combined income.

On the App Store itself, TikTok is the number one and number two best-selling non-game app on Google Play, on Google One, TikTok generates more than US$300 million equivalent to Rp4.5 trillion in Q3 in 2022.

To date, the TikTok and Douyin applications have pocketed a total revenue of around US$6.3 billion, equivalent to Rp. 95 trillion.

Even so, in the broader app market, the trend is not so positive. Consumer spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions, and downloads on the App Store and Google Play fell 4.8 percent year-on-year (YoY) to US$31.6 billion or Rp481 trillion in Q3, while app downloads fell slightly 1 percent to 35.3 billion.

Furthermore, the App Store continues to contribute to most consumer spending double that of Google Play. In Q3, the App Store drew $2.2 billion, which fell 2.3 percent YoY from US$21.7 billion, which was seen in the quarter last year.

The decline in Google Play was even sharper, down 9.6 percent YoY from 11.5 billion US dollars to Rp175 trillion to 10.4 billion US dollars or Rp158 trillion.

As reported by TechCrunch, Friday, September 30, unfortunately, the installation of apps fell slightly. But as Google Play was responsible for pushing for downloads, the decline was only nearly 1 percent due to an earlier 2.2 percent drop to 27 billion downloads in the quarter.

But the App Store has actually seen app installations grow by 3.8 percent to 8.2 billion, but this cannot cancel the larger decline in Google Play.

Again, TikTok is the most downloaded non-game app with 196.5 million installations in the combination of both app stores and on iOS. But when Google Play checked for itself, Facebook moved to place number one with 150.3 million installations replacing Instagram.
