Jakarta – Presidential Chief of Staff Dr. Moeldoko revealed the government's reason for accelerating the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia. Namely, realizing the clean energy transition, and reducing the fuel subsidy budget (BBM).

He said that currently the amount of fuel subsidies for cars is estimated at Rp 19.2 million per year per car. Meanwhile, for motorcycles, the amount of subsidy provided is IDR 3.7 million per motorcycle per year.

"If the development of electric vehicles is accelerated, the fuel subsidy whose value reaches hundreds of trillions of rupiah can be diverted to other programs, such as human resource development", said Moeldoko when opening the seminar at the 2022 Perklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) at Jiexpo Kemayoran Jakarta.

Moeldoko emphasized that the government has a strong commitment to accelerating the development of electric vehicles. This is evidenced by the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 55/2019 regarding the acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle program. Currently, he continued, the government is also preparing other instruments to make the transition and conversion of conventional vehicles to electric vehicles.

“Now the Presidential Instruction is being prepared for the transition and conversion of conventional vehicles to electric vehicles in the government environment. The Ministry of Transportation is preparing the prototype", he explained.

On that occasion, Moeldoko also mentioned that there is still a perception that potential users consider electric vehicles to be unsafe, expensive, and difficult to charge. This, he said, is very reasonable because so far people have been comfortable with various conveniences in using conventional vehicles.

“It is not easy to change this habit. This is a challenge that we must answer. And this 2022 PEVS Exhibition is one way to show that the use of electric vehicles is not complicated", concluded Moeldoko, who is also the Head of Perikliindo.
