JAKARTA - Meta Platform Inc. again expanded its game business by launching a game development platform dubbed Crayta. This is similar to Roblox where users can build and play games with friends in real time on Facebook Gaming.

Crayta provides developer tools that are certainly easy to use, and make game creation more accessible, both on mobile and desktop.

The launch of the Crayta platform is not surprising, because in June 2021 Meta acquired Unit 2 Games which is the studio behind Crayta.

Initially Crayta launched as a platform exclusive to Google Stadia but moved to the Epic Games Store last year.

“Normally if you want to run something like this in a high quality 3D environment it would be very difficult to render in a browser or on a mobile, but being able to do it with a cloud infrastructure and then send it around the world, networking after rendering it in the cloud is a pretty big step forward. ,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a video about the launch of Crayta.

By making Crayta available on the Facebook Gaming cloud streaming service, users don't have to download the game to their computer to play it.

Launching TechCrunch, Thursday, June 9, the platform is free to play and will be available to anyone with a Facebook account.

“A lot of times these days, people think of the metaverse as a 3D experience that you can have in virtual and augmented reality, but I think what Crayta is showing is that you can both build and enjoy this kind of experience very easily in any type of 2D environment, including only within the Facebook app on phones and computers," Zuckerberg explained.

The company says Crayta can be used to create and publish simple multiplayer games in as little as 15 minutes, without needing to code or use other special skills.

In addition, Crayta can invite up to 20 people to collaborate on the game at the same time. The launch of Crayta on Facebook Gaming represents Meta's continued investment into the metaverse.

As part of Crayta's announcement, Zuckerberg also revealed Facebook Gaming will be expanding its cloud games catalog to Western Europe. Meta says this is an important step for companies to take, noting that it will play an important role in providing a metaverse experience across Meta platforms in the future.
