SOLO - Breakthroughs and innovations are an important part of the medical field. The Chancellor of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Jamal Wiwoho stated that this needs to be continuously developed through research.

"It is undeniable that research support in the fields of medicine and health is a very important part to do, especially every year the development of diseases, drugs, and medical devices continues to emerge," he said at the opening of the Doctor's Profession Webinar and Medicine Innovation organized by the UNS Academic Senate. online in Solo, Saturday, April 23.

He said the development of medical science can not be separated from the various new discoveries produced by scientists who continuously conduct research and development in the field of medicine and health.

"This at the same time encourages the growth of innovation and independence in the field of health services and supporting industries. Doctors as the front line in serving public health are indeed required to not stop making breakthroughs and innovations in the treatment they are taking," he said as quoted by Antara.

However, it must also be realized that every medical action taken by a doctor against his patient must still rely on the medical code of ethics and the doctor's oath that has been uttered.

"Breakthroughs and innovations in the fields of medicine and health in modern life are absolutely necessary, so that Indonesian medical science does not stagnate. In addition, the emergence of new breakthroughs and innovations made by medical colleagues can support the accelerated transformation program in the field of medicine and health," he said. .

He said that until the end of 2021 there were several breakthroughs and innovations made by doctors which ultimately influenced the development of medical science both in Indonesia and at the global level. One of them is the discovery of vaccines which are then used to prevent the transmission of diseases caused by viruses or bacteria.

"Also the discovery of editing or genetic editing that is effectively used to reduce the production of toxic proteins in the liver. We also hear the development of cardiology technology for the treatment of the heart and blood vessels, and others," he said.

He said the emergence of various innovations made by doctors was an answer as well as hope to the complexity of public health problems faced by the medical world from year to year.

"On the one hand, the public certainly needs guarantees for scientific truth and generally accepted medical practices in accordance with medical SOPs and of course they can be accounted for. On the other hand, doctors who in their profession greatly determine the good or bad of healing methods and public health conditions during and after treatment. must have agreements and rules of the game that are universal," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the innovation of treatment methods carried out by medical colleagues personally, it is a work and innovation that needs to be appreciated.

"Of course we really appreciate his work and innovation as a doctor who is out of the box. However, medicine is a scientific world, every medical creation must first be researched and generally recognized by the medical profession. The innovation in treatment methods that he does ideally should go in rhythm," he said.
