What is an IP Address?

IP stands for Internet Protocol, or IP address. An IP address is a numbered label assigned to each device connected to a network. So, as long as you are online, you have an IP address.

In its development, the IP address itself is divided into two: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 is a version of the IP address that still uses 32 bits and has been in use since 1980. Meanwhile, IPv6 is an improved version.

Checking a device's IP address can help you identify it on your home network and the internet in general. Actually, there are two IP addresses, public and private, to identify every device including your phone:

Public IP address (or global IP address)

A public IP address is how the internet sees any device on your network. Since it's network-only, your global IP will be the same whether you're using your phone, desktop PC, or any other device at home.

Private IP address (or local IP address)

Private IP addresses identify devices on your own network. Only one device can have a specific address on a network, but the same address can also be used on other private networks.

How to Find Your Android Phone's Private IP Address

Here are the steps to find your Android phone's local IP address, which is displayed on Pixel devices running Android 11. Location information and menu names may vary slightly depending on your Android phone:

Go to Settings and browse to Network & internet > Wi-Fi. If you're not already connected to your Wi-Fi network, tap its name and confirm that you've joined. Tap the network name and expand the Advanced section. You will find your IP address and other information under Network Details.

How to Find Your iPhone's Private IP Address

To find your local IP address on iPhone, here's what to do:

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi. If you are not already connected to your home network, tap it and connect now. Tap your network name to open options and see more information.

You will see the IP Address field listed under the IPv4 Address header. You may see the IPv6 Address header below, depending on your network.

How to Check Your Phone's Public IP Address

Now that you know your phone's private IP address on your network, let's take a look at how to check your device's global IP address.

Your public IP is easy to find because any device on the internet can see it. This way, you can visit many websites that will display your public IP address instantly, right on your phone.

Just open Chrome on your Android phone or Safari on your iPhone, then navigate to a public IP checker website, such as one of these:

You'll notice that some of these sites also display your location, ISP name, and similar info. This is because your IP address carries this information with it. However, you can't tell someone's exact name and address from their IP address.
