JAKARTA - Not a few Twitter users wonder why there is one word that could become a trending topic on the social media network. Now Twitter explains how that happened.

Basically, trending topics on Twitter highlight certain keywords that are trending. To make it easier to understand, this social network with the blue bird logo will add tweets and related descriptions of where the words on the trending topic come from.

Through its official blog, Thursday 3 September, Twitter announced that they will make changes in which, this trending topic will be explained along with the initial tweet that triggered a trending topic.

"To help with this, we added a pinned Tweet and a description of the trend to help explain why something is trending," said Twitter.

Indeed, Trending Topic on Twitter uses a combination of algorithms and a curation team to determine if a tweet represents and reflects a trending topic.

"Our algorithms are designed to identify reps' tweets that are not potentially offensive, spam, or posted by accounts trying to exploit our systems," said Twitter.

The addition of tweets pinned on trending topics will be made gradually for iOS and Android users, including the web version of Twitter. Later on, to clarify the conversation, going forward Twitter will add more context to more trends over time.

"Descriptions will provide immediate context and clear sources around why something is trending. Descriptions were developed by our curation team and follow their guidelines," said Twitter.

Pinned posts and descriptions will begin pinning for Twitter users in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, and United States (US).
