Micron Closes Operations In China, 150 Engineers Asked To Move To US

JAKARTA - Memory chip maker Micron Technology will close its DRAM chip design operations in Shanghai by the end of this year. The confirmation of the closure was reported by the South China Morning Post on Wednesday, January 26.

Micron did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. However, information emerged from SCMP that they would ask about 150 engineers from China at the factory to move to the United States or India.

Semiconductor production has been a source of tension between the US and China. At present the United States has sought to shift the balance back to the West and away from Asia, driven by intellectual property and supply chain issues.

Micron manufactures NAND memory chips that serve the data storage market as well as DRAM chips widely used in data centers, personal computers and other devices.

They are becoming one of the most important factories in the midst of the global chip shortage problem. The closure of Micron in China will have a negative impact on the technology industry in China.
