JAKARTA - A short video platform that is quite popular and similar to TikTok, Dubsmash plans to close its operations. Reddit as its parent company will close the app on February 22, 2022.

The company stated that after February next year, Dubsmash will no longer be available for download on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. The pre-installed apps will also stop working on the same date.

The company acquired Dubsmash in December 2020 and said it would integrate its video creation tools into Reddit. Following the acquisition, the Dubsmash leadership team merged with Reddit.

"Since joining, the Dubsmash team has been working to integrate their innovative video creation tools into Reddit, with the goal of empowering Reddit creators themselves to express themselves in original ways that are authentic to our community," said Reddit.

Citing TechCrunch, Wednesday, November 24, as part of its closing announcement, Reddit is also launching a new video creation tool. Includes camera features including the ability to change the video recording speed and the option to set a timer.

Users can now upload videos in landscape as well as portrait modes, as well as adjust and trim multiple clips. Reddit added a new editing screen that includes text stickers, drawing tools, and filters. In fact, users have the option to add voice over or adjust the volume directly on the editing screen.

In August, Reddit launched a video feed feature for iOS users, which shows a row of videos in a TikTok-like configuration. Users can comment, award or share it. Similar to TikTok, users can also scroll up to view other videos.

Reddit reveals video content has surged on its app due to its nearly 70 percent growth in overall watch hours. It notes that there has been a 30 percent increase in daily active video audience growth.

The app also saw a 50 percent increase in quarter-on-quarter views of short videos, described as less than 2 seconds, in its new video player.

Now that Reddit has completed its Dubsmash integration, it should come as no surprise that Reddit is looking to garner more users by launching its own new video creation tool as it aims to continue to compete with TikTok.
