JAKARTA – Dyson, renowned as a revolutionary bagless vacuum cleaner, will allow customers to test their hair dryers, straighteners and stylists from the comfort of their homes, via virtual reality.

Dyson Demo VR has been created with the same visualization and simulation technologies used by the UK company's engineers to prototype, test and develop new products and software.

James Dyson, the company's founder and chief engineer, says VR is a way to increase people's understanding of Dyson products.

"We've been leveraging powerful virtual reality technologies to engineer new products in our labs for years, now we're applying the same technology to reinventing the way people explore our products," he said.

The consumer goods company is testing new online and virtual ways to interact with customers in anticipation of the creation of the metaverse, a VR concept that entered the mainstream last month when Facebook changed its name to "Meta Platform Inc".

Dyson said in a statement that its virtual reality showroom is an extension of direct-to-consumer sales through its 318 stores and website and will be available through VR headset store Oculus starting Friday 19 November.

Director of e-commerce, Sean Newmarch, said demonstrations are an important part of showing how the product works and future Dyson Demo VR will incorporate a fully integrated e-commerce solution and the ability to talk to real salespeople.

Newmarch said it would launch Dyson hair care products, with a range of floor treatments to follow.
