JAKARTA - Uncertain wind conditions will be a challenge for archery athletes competing in the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON), said Central Java archery contingent coach Permadi Sandra.
"Winds are a challenge for athletes, but for this layout (the archery arena) it is very feasible," Permadi said as quoted by Antara, Wednesday.
For Permadi, this erratic wind condition is a distinct advantage, because athletes can hone their skills such as calculating distance, speed, and wind direction.
That way, said Permadi, PON Papua will be a valuable experience for athletes to be able to adjust to both wind and weather conditions.
The wind conditions in Papua are almost similar to the Tokyo Olympics which made Arif Dwi Pangestu have to be eliminated in the first round of the men's individual.
"You could say that (advantage), meaning that under any conditions athletes must be prepared for more extreme weather and wind conditions. It is indeed a challenge for archers to adjust to the weather," he said.
Previously, the sport of archery had started the XX Papua PON match on Wednesday. A number of Olympic athletes competed to defend their respective regions.
There were four Olympians who took part in the XX Papua PON, namely Arif Dwi Pangestu (DI Yogyakarta), Alviyanto Bagas Prastyadi (Central Java), Riau Ega Agata Salsabila (East Java), and Diananda Choirunisa (East Java).
