JAKARTA - Indonesian men's singles badminton player, Jonatan Christie, admitted that he was disappointed because he was not able to contribute winning points for the Garuda squad in the second stage of Group C of the 2021 Sudirman Cup. However, he also regrets that there is no use of hawk eye technology in such a big championship.

In the match which took place on Monday night WIB, Jojo, Jonatan Christie's nickname, was forced to his knees by Canadian representative Brian Yang in three games with a score of 21-9, 20-22, 18-21.

Jojo looked charming in the first game. He was able to pick up point by point quickly and ended the match with a 21-9 win.

Unfortunately in the second game, the 24-year-old was unable to maintain his appearance. Evidently, when he was already leading 20-19, he was even cornered and lost 20-22.

His failure to win the second game also seemed to disturb the focus and concentration of the 2018 Asian Games gold winner. After leading 4-0, Jojo was followed 4-4, and then continued to fall behind until finally losing 18-21.

“Frankly, I feel disappointed because of this defeat and not being able to contribute points for Indonesia. I apologize for this failure," said Jojo in an official statement from PBSI received by Antara in Jakarta, Tuesday morning.

According to Jojo, Brian Yang is not a random player. He is considered to have good abilities as a badminton player. For that, Jojo also acknowledged Brian's greatness.

“I did lose and there are many lessons to be learned. When I was ahead and had lost a point in the second game, I shouldn't have had to change my strategy by playing fast which is Brian's favorite," said Jojo.

"As a player, he (Brian Yang) has a track record that is not too bad," he added.

Apart from that defeat, Jojo also regretted one thing in the championship, which was not applying hawk eye technology in Field 3. So when there was a line judge's decision as he felt in the deciding game, he could not ask for a review.

In the third game, precisely at the last point, Jojo saw the shuttlecock go out of line. However, the line judge declared that he had entered. Jojo had time to protest, but the referee who led the match did not change his decision.

"It's not just a matter of losing, but for a championship of this magnitude, the entire field should have hawk eye technology so that the match is fairer," said Jojo.

Besides Jojo, Indonesian women's singles Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo also lost 24-22, 8-21, 18-21 to Canadian representative Rachel Chan.
