Preview England Vs Germany: Away From Penalty Shootouts, Der Panzer Wants To Win In 90 Minutes

JAKARTA - Germany will face England in the last 16 of Euro 2020 on Tuesday, 29 June evening at Wembley Stadium, London. How will the match go and who will advance to the quarter-finals?

Der Panzer have a brilliant track record in penalty shootouts in international tournaments where they have never lost except against Czechoslovakia in the 1978 Euro final.

They also broke the hearts of the British public who were then hosts and they eliminated on penalties in the semifinals of Euro 1996 at Wembley, before winning the tournament.

However, Der Panzer midfielder Kai Havertz said he and his team-mates did not spend much time practicing penalty kicks ahead of the last 16 clash. They hope to win in 90 minutes.

"We went into the game with the ambition of winning it in 90 minutes," Havertz said.

"Of course in this round the game could go on to penalties and we have to be ready. To be honest after the training session we took some penalties to see who the best executioner was.

"But that's not the main problem of this game. 120 minutes before the shootout is much more important and putting pressure on the team itself about penalties is not a good idea."

Germany qualified for the round of 16 through Leon Goretzka's dramatic goal which was able to draw 2-2 against Hungary in the closing match of Group F.

While England also qualified equally less convincingly despite winning Group D with seven points and a clean sheet, but they are the team with the lowest goal productivity among all group winners with only two goals scored.

"Ignoring them would obviously be wrong. We know England well. They have some of the best players, and they can still improve," said Havertz.

"But England so far have not conceded a goal and have a lot of quality players. You have to respect them, but we are also a team that contains great players. For me and the whole team this will be a special game," he concluded.

If able to pass England, Germany will meet Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-finals.
