JAKARTA - Kai Havertz has expressed his feelings about the pressure he received during his first season at Chelsea.
The German attacking midfielder, who joined the Blues from Bayer Leverkusen in a £71m deal - the second most expensive contract in the club's history - is expected to make a big impact after a splendid 2019/20 season under coach Peter Bosz.
As it turned out, it didn't take long for Havertz to make a first impression in London. He scored a hat-trick in the EFL Cup against Barnsley last September.
But despite a promising start, the talented German struggled for a regular position for most of his first season in England.
In an interview with German outlet Suddeutsche Zeitung, Havertz claimed the British public's expectations were too high to weigh him down when he first arrived at Stamford Bridge.
"People expect you to be the new Cristiano Ronaldo," he said.
"But it won't be that fast, everything is new and I really didn't play my best game at the start."
In March, a 22-year-old man, who had been exposed to COVID-19 four months earlier, admitted that moving to a new country during the lockdown period was very difficult.

"For me, it's difficult to change everything," he told The Mirror.
"It's difficult for me, but I've been here for six months and I'm getting used to the place, the country. I hope I will return to Germany soon. It's hard for me, I'm always happy to spend time with them.
"This is not the right time to spend time with them. But it's not just me, there are thousands of other people in even worse situations than me.
"That's no excuse for me. I will give my best."
Evidently, Havertz enjoyed an impressive season in recent weeks, scoring Chelsea as the winner over Manchester City in last month's Champions League final.
