PBSI Opens the Possibility of Overhauling Coaches after Failing in the 2026 Thomas Cup

PBSI Deputy Secretary General, Taufik Hidayat, plans to overhaul the coaching staff of the Cipayung Pelatnas (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA - The Central Management of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PP PBSI) opened the possibility of restructuring the coach's line-up at the Cipayung National Training Center (Pelatnas) after missing the 2026 Thomas Cup target in Denmark.

Deputy Chairman of the General (Waketum) of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), Taufik Hidayat, said that making adjustments in the coach's composition as well as the promotion and relegation of Pelatnas athletes was a common thing after the evaluation was carried out.

"It's very possible (there will be a coach change). Why not? If we give the opportunity, but there is no performance, why not?" said Taufik in Jakarta.

PBSI is currently uncertain about promoting and demoting athletes in a calendar year. This is different from before, where athletes are usually summoned and repatriated at the end of the year.

Taufik said that the refresher for coaching staff could also be done like the athlete system. He emphasized that as long as it does not meet the target of the PBSI, then an evaluation must be carried out.

"We are here looking for solutions, want the best. This sport can't wait any longer, every day of training, every week, every month there is a match. So, it can't. We are looking for the best formula," said the Olympic gold medalist.

When appearing in the 2026 Thomas Cup, Indonesia failed to reach the knockout stage for the first time in history. This certainty came after swallowing defeat in the match against France in the last group match.

Meanwhile, in the women's sector, Indonesia's journey was halted in the semifinals. Kusuma Wardani's daughter and her friends failed to reach the final in two consecutive editions and had to settle for a bronze medal after being beaten by South Korea.

Taufik emphasized that PBSI was fully responsible for Indonesia's minor results on the 2026 Thomas & Uber Cup stage. He also wants all parties to have the same spirit to bring Indonesian badminton back to the top.

"We all have to be responsible. There is no coach, player, in a comfortable zone, yes, it's nice there. Of course we need the same teamwork here," he said.
