JAKARTA - The International Badminton Federation (BWF) made significant changes in the competition calendar for 2027 to 2030, including raising the level of the Denmark Open to Super 1000.
The latest changes increase the number of tournaments in a calendar year to 36. In addition, the international badminton parent also made changes to the competition format to boost the commercial value and global fan experience.
BWF President, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, emphasized that this bold step was taken so that badminton would remain relevant for future generations.
"We are not only forming a series of tournaments, we are forming a culture, identity, and opportunities. Badminton must be immersive, intelligent, and unforgettable," said Leeswadtrakul as quoted from the BWF official website.
Next year's calendar makes the elite badminton face a schedule that is much denser than before which is only 26 to 31 tournaments. This is triggered by the full integration of the Super 100 level into the BWF World Tour series.

The match format was also revamped, especially in the singles sector which will be attended by 48 participants will use the group phase system before entering the knockout round. As for the doubles sector, it still uses the knockout system with 32 pairs.
Furthermore, for the World Championships, it will adopt a group phase to ensure that each athlete competes at least twice.
Meanwhile, doubles events such as the Sudirman Cup and the Thomas & Uber Cup will involve more teams to expand country representation.
