JAKARTA Jonathan Christie, who was the first seed at the 2025 Australian Open, suffered a crushing defeat in the round of 32 so that he was eliminated early from the tournament.

The badminton player, who had left the PBSI National Training Center, gave up two straight games 17-21 and 7-21 against Yushi Tanaka in Sydney on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

"Today is very far from what has been prepared. It plays poorly and cannot develop," said the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist after the match.

Jonathan started the first game well to take a 5-2 lead over his opponent, but instead fell two points behind at the interval. After that, he couldn't catch up with Tanaka anymore.

He doubled the score to 12-13 and 13-14. However, Tanaka scored five points in a row after that, making Jonathan even more cornered.

In the second game, Tanaka started well and scored four consecutive points. After that, the Japanese men's singles rate could no longer be blocked.

"Learning from here, my mind really needs to be relieved first. Throw everything that has passed first. Then, focus again in the future because there are still BWF World Tour Finals waiting," said Jonatan.

Jonathan's defeat left the Indonesian men's singles, Alwi Farhan, who qualified for the second half without a match because his opponent, deputy host Jie Ying Chan, withdrew due to injury.
