JAKARTA - WTA world number one Ashleigh Barty has yet to find any significant obstacles in her opening match at the 2021 Italian Open. Barty defeated Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 6-1 to reach the round of 16.
"I played without a doubt, and overall I'm happy to get through it and get another chance to compete tomorrow. Today's match made me more excited," Barty said via the WTA's official website quoted by Antara on Wednesday, May 12.
In an hour-and-18 minute match, Barty overcame Shvedova's resistance in the first set and increased her winning streak to 26 in a row in the 2021 season so far.
Barty was left behind in the first set by her own mistake, but managed to overcome it to take control of the match.
In the second set, 665th-ranked Shvedova made an attack early in the set to break Barty's serve. As the top seed, Barty proved her quality by breaking Shvedova's serve in the last three serves.
"Slava has a technique that can end your dominance pretty quickly. I'm just trying to go back and take a chance," Barty said.
