US Open 2025: Janice Tjen Qualifies For Second Round, Meets Emma Raducanu

JAKARTA Tennis Indonesia, Janice Tjen, managed to beat the 24th seed, Veronika Kudermetova, to reach the second round of the US Open 2025.

Janice, who started her journey in the tournament from the qualifying round, kept her dream with a final score of 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4 at USTA 13 Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Monday, August 25, 2025, early morning WIB.

This result made Janice match the best achievements of Indonesian tennis legend Yayuk Basuki who reached the second round of the year-end Grand Slam tournament in 1991 and 1997 and Angelique Widjaja in 2002.

In addition, Janice became the first Indonesian player to win the main draw of the Grand Slam in 22 years since Angelique Widjaja won on the Wimbledon grass field in 2003.

Entering the first round at the US Open, Janice ended the long wait for Indonesia to have a women's singles at the Grand Slam event since Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open.

This is Janice Tjen's fourth victory at the US Open 2025, including three matches in the qualifying round. While in qualifying, she was recorded to beat Varvara Lepchenko (United States), Maja Challinska (Poland), and Aoi Ito (Japan).

Janice will next be subjected to a tough test in the second half. The reason is, he will face Emma Raducanu, who won the US Open 2021 title.

Raducanu entered the second half after beating Ena Shibahara from Japan. The England number one met Ena after having never won a match at Flushing Meadows since winning in 2021.

However, Raducanu only needed 62 minutes and ended the match with 6-1 and 6-2 to record the fastest Grand Slam main draw of his career.
