JAKARTA The International Badminton Federation Council (BWF) officially approved the use of the 3 X 45 point format in the BWF World Junior Team Championships or the 2025 Suhandinata Cup.

This is the second year in a row, the international badminton parent used the Suhandinata Cup as a trial of a new point system. Previously in the 2024 edition, this event was a trial of the 110 relay point system.

This year the point system in the championship was changed to 3 X 45 format. This was confirmed by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) in an official statement on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

"The BWF board has approved the proposal for a 3 X 45 relay score system. Apart from the 2025 Suhandinata Cup, this system will also be used at the continental-level Team Junior Championships in 2026," PBSI wrote in their official release.

This new format makes one match consist of three sets and a team that wins in two sets will be winners. Each set consists of five games which include the men's and women's singles categories as well as men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.

Each game looks for nine points without settings. Each set has a total of 45 points. The minimum number of players in one team is six (three sons and three daughters) and the maximum is 16 players (eight men and eight daughters).

Players play a maximum of three games in each set. The interval provisions are every three-minute set, in the middle of the game (poin 5, 14, 23, 32, and 41) 60 seconds, and between two-minute games.

If the players withdraw in the middle of the game then win for the opponent. For example, Team A won 18-0 in the second game, in the game the three players in team A withdrew, the points for team B became 18-27.

Then in the line-up of the match, each team has the opportunity to replace one player in the middle of the match. The details of the substitution will be informed at the next opportunity.

In this year's edition, Indonesia as the defending champion of the Suhandinata Cup, joined in Group C with Turkey, Romania, and the Netherlands. On paper, Indonesia is very superior.
