ANSA news agency reports that the new Coppa Italia format was formulated to make the competition more valuable to broadcasters, by ensuring the matches are more attractive from the early stages.

Talk of a "more interesting match" took a breath on the grounds underlying the formation of the European Super League, which three Serie A clubs Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan took part in last month, before the competition was canceled due to heavy opposition.

The current format has seen 27 Serie C teams and nine Serie D clubs involved in the Coppa Italia since the first round.

Twenty Serie B teams have entered since the second round, followed by 12 teams from the bottom rank of Serie A involved in the third round and the top eight teams in Serie A have just taken part from the last 16.
