JAKARTA The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has had careful consideration in appointing Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo to replace Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the 2025 Sudirman Cup.
PBSI previously confirmed that Gregoria could not defend Indonesia because of the vertigo. The 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medalist needed to take a break for a few days due to this problem.
Deputy Chairperson of PBSI, Taufik Hidayat, said that Ester was the most suitable option to choose to replace Gregoria in the mixed team event.
"Who else do you want apart from Ester? They continue to practice, in the sense that there are matches, there are no matches, they still have to be ready at any time," said the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Ester will be the second Indonesian women's singles in the 2025 Sudirman Cup. She will accompany her colleague Putri Kusuma Wardani whose status has increased to the first women's singles in line with Gregoria's absence.
Taufik explained that all players at the PBSI National Training Center have always been prepared for a long time so that in a situation like now they can have layer players who are ready to come down to defend Indonesia.
"If something happens in the Sudirman Cup tomorrow, there will be more reserves. The other sectors are the same. Yesterday, BWF also got approval. So, it can come in," he said.
The 2025 Sudirman Cup will take place from 27 April to 4 May 2025 at the Fenghuang Gimnasium, Xiamen, China. A total of 16 countries are contestants for the biennial event.
Indonesia will start the journey from Group D with India, England and Denmark. The top two teams in the final standings will get tickets to qualify for the quarter-finals.
This year Indonesia came with the status of the second seed, behind the host China. PBSI targets Ester and her friends to reach the final round.
