Mainz Forces Bayern To Postpone Champion Party

JAKARTA - FSV Mainz forced Bayern Munich to postpone the German League champions' party after defeating the guest with a score of 2-1 in Week 31 at the Opel Arena Stadium.

The goals of Jonathan Burkardt and Robin Quaison in the first half of the match could only be replied to by Robert Lewandowski for Bayern at the end of the second half's injury time, according to the official German League page records reported by Antara.

Just three minutes into the match, the hosts were able to open the scoring through Burkart's volley grabbing a wild ball from Jerome Boateng's imperfect header.

The goal grew Mainz's confidence, unfortunately their two chances from Danny Latza and Danny da Costa were still pushed over by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who twice brushed the ball and slammed it into the post.

However, in the 37th minute, Neuer was moved when Robin Quaison calmly headed home a Philipp Mwene free-kick to double Mainz's lead.

Hansi Flick's team struggled to catch up with two goals down but, their dominance of 72 per cent of ball possession barely yielded any results.

In the fourth minute of injury time, Lewandowski, who had just returned from a knee injury, was able to find Mainz's goal, but it only ended up being a consolation goal for Bayern who lost 1-2 to the hosts.

In the next match, Bayern will host Borussia Moenchengladbach at the Allianz Arena on Saturday (8/5) next week, while Mainz a day later visits Eintracht Frankfurt headquarters.
