JAKARTA - Borussia Dortmund has reached a principle agreement with Niko Kovac to become a new head coach.
Die Borussen Managing Director Lars Ricken confirmed this after a 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Thursday, January 30, 2025, early morning WIB.
"We have reached a principle agreement with Niko Kovac. He will take over the team on Sunday (2/2/2025)," Ricken told DAZN that the match was over at Signal Iduna Park.
Work at Dortmund will be Kovac's fourth job as head coach of the Bundesliga team. The Croatian coach has previously coached Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, and Wolfsburg.
The 53-year-old coach lifted the DFB Pokal trophy with Eintracht, before winning the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal doubles titles with Bayern Munich.

He has been unemployed for a long time since leaving the Wolves coaching chair in March 2024.
Meanwhile, Dortmund previously confirmed that the U-19 team coach, Mike Tullberg, became interim coach after Nuri Sahin's departure last week, to be precise on January 22, 2025.
Nuri Badmin served 27 competitive matches, before he was sacked with a record of 12 wins, four draws, and 11 defeats in all competitions.
Tullberg will also still lead Dortmund for the away game to Heidenheim on Saturday, February 1, 2025, the day before Kovac officially takes control of the team.
After leading Die Borussen when he drew 2-2 against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga last weekend, victory over Shakhtar marked Tullberg's first win as interim coach and Dortmund's first win in 2025.
These results made them advance to the last 16 of the Champions League playoffs against Sporting Lisbon or Club Brugge.
In the 2024/2025 Bundesliga, Dortmund struggled to 11th place. They only collected 26 points, 22 points at odds from Bayern Munich at the top of the standings.
