PSSI Chairman Denies Decision To Fire Shin Tae-yong Due To Pressure From A Number Of Parties

PSSI chairman Erick Thohir admitted that Shin Tae-yong's dismissal was based on a thorough evaluation (doc. PSSI).

JAKARTA - PSSI General Chair (Ketum), Erick Thohir, emphasized that the decision to end the collaboration with Shin Tae-yong was purely based on the results of the evaluation. He denied any pressure from outside parties about the status of the South Korean coach.

In a press conference agenda in the Central Jakarta area on Monday, January 6, 2025, Erick Thohir explicitly said there was no pressure from anywhere regarding the fate of Shin Tae-yong.

You see, previously there was an issue that PSSI fired the South Korean coach because of pressure from the football mafia to the PSSI Executive Committee (Exco).

"I don't think it's all true because you know I'm a leader who can't be pressed," said Erick Thohir in his statement.

"I'm sure what we're doing is all for good. The point is we have to work hard, can't just accept the situation and hope for a good result," said Erick Thohir.

He said, the decision to dismiss Shin Tae-yong was purely born through careful consideration in order to realize Indonesia's mission to compete in the 2026 World Cup.

Currently, the Indonesian national team's chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup is still open through four matches remaining in the Third Round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. So far, the Garuda Squad is in third place in Group C standings with six points from six matches.

The team that finished first and second will automatically advance to the 2026 World Cup finals played in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, third and fourth place will advance to the Fourth Round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
