Brighton Held To A 1-1 Draw With Southampton, Seagulls Up To Second Place In The Temporary Standings

JAKARTA Brighton & Hove Albion had to settle for sharing points with Southampton after a 1-1 draw in the match which took place at the Amex Stadium, Saturday 30 November. Although this result did not match expectations, Brighton still managed to move up to second place in the Premier League standings, at least until the match between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday 1 December.

The match started with the dominance of the hosts who appeared aggressive from the early minutes. Brighton finally opened the scoring in the 29th minute through the action of Mythoma. The Japanese player made the most of the cross, ahead of his compatriot Yukinari Sugawara before heading the ball into Joe Lumley's goal which made his Premier League debut.

However, Southampton, who appeared as a visiting team, did not remain silent. They kept trying to retaliate and finally equalized in the 59th minute. Flynn Downes scored his first Premier League goal with a measured shot from outside the box which Brighton goalkeeper Jason totaled.

The goal boosted Southampton, who had scored the second goal through Cameron Archer eight minutes later. Unfortunately, the goal was ruled out by VAR because Archer was in an offside position. The decision made the game even fierce, with both teams attacking each other until the last minute.

In an additional 10 minutes, Brighton came close to securing victory when Mitoma sent a mature pass to Simon Adingra. Unfortunately, Adingra's shot only hit the post, making the final score 1-1.

Despite only getting one point, Brighton set a new record under coach Fabian Hurzeler. Hurzeler became the first unbeaten manager in seven Premier League home games since Maurizio Sarri with Chelsea in the 2018-2019 season. Meanwhile, this result is also a turning point for Southampton which ultimately ended their nine consecutive away defeats in this competition.

With this result, Brighton temporarily secured second place in the standings, one place below Liverpool. On the other hand, Southampton remains at the bottom and still have to fight hard to get out of the relegation zone. The next match will be decisive for both teams in maintaining their consistency in the remainder of the season.
